Navy Dept., 1873, 7¢ ultramarine (O39), violet quartered cork cancel, matching "Washington, D.C., May 14, 1878" c.d.s., on cover to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a 3¢ green (158) originally postmarked Pikesville, Md. and addressed to W.S. Benson, as previous lot; flap missing, small edge tears, tiny corner repair at bottom right, stamps with few perforation stains, still Fine and quite attractive, the 7¢ Navy made up the 10¢ treaty rate when the cover was forwarded to Brazil. Many of the great collectors of Officials, such as Ackerman, Hughes and Ehrenberg, never owned a 7¢ Navy cover.
Midshipman William Shepherd Benson, a graduate of the Naval Academy, went on to become Chief of Naval operations and served as such until he retired as an Admiral in 1919.
