Canal Zone 1906, 10c violet & black, overprint reading up (26b), left sheet margin single with additional "ZONE" in selvage. Original gum. Fresh and Very Fine.
Scott $4,000

OF THE FIVE RECORDED EXAMPLES, THIS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT IS SOUND.

Expertization: 2005 P.F. Certificate for a horizontal combination pair with the right stamp being Scott 26a.

This error occurred when the pressman noticed that the sheet of 100 that he had just overprinted had been placed so far into the press that the left vertical row had received no overprint. to correct his error he turned the sheet 180° and placed it part way into the press, intending only for the first row to receive the overprint. Unfortunately (or fortunately for the Canal Zone collector), he put the sheet in a little too far, resulting in the second vertical row also receiving the upward overprint and thereby creating Scott 26a, the double overprint with one reading up. There were 10 of each variety so created, but to date only about half of each have been found.

Also includes a photocopy of the 1969 A.P.S. Certificate for the irregular block of eight (ex-Plass) from which this pair was taken.
