Porter, Gen. Fitz John, Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac free frank envelope with franking signature of W.M. Dunn, M.C., addressed by Gen. Porter to his wife in New York City, postmarked Washington, D.C., Feb 13 (1862), docketing, presumably by his wife, reads "Washington Feb-12-62, Success of Burnside"; also one-page handwritten letter by Porter datelined New York, May 15, 1895, to a T.H. Clarke complying with a request for an autograph and including the autographs of "several prominent persons [not present] - which may aid to fill some vacant places in your collection". Porter was court martialled for his role in the Union Army's defeat at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run. The move was politically motivated and Porter was later exonerated.
