Recruiting Bounty, partly-printed document, Lockport, N.Y., Provost Marshal's Office, August, 16, 1864; top half certifies that one Daniel D. McLachlen has presented one Albert Ruscu to serve "as his Substitute in the Military Service"; bottom half, dated Aug. 22 at Batavia, N.Y., is a receipt for $400 "for Bounty and premium on above", signed by McLachlen; affixed 2¢ revenue stamp is also signed and dated by McLachlen (DDMcL). As the war dragged on many states paid a bounty in order to fill their quotas. Those new recruits sometimes used the bounty money to pay substitutes to serve for them.
