1863, 20¢ green (13), horizontal pair paying the 40¢ Trans-Mississippi Express rate, three large margins, just touching at the right, with small pre-use closed tear, tied by an incomplete strike of a Dec 20 Chattanooga, Tenn. c.d.s. on a cover to "Waco, McLennan County, Texas" with manuscript instruction "Via Brandon, Miss."; reduced at the left with damp staining and a few small worm holes at the lower right. Chattanooga was occupied by the Union on September 9, 1863, and control passed from one side to the other in the months that followed. Whenever the city was in Union hands, Confederate mail was handled by an underground postal system.
