Canada, Earliest Recorded Cash Letter, postmarked straight line "PERTH" on back of folded letter dated 21st of October, 1823, manuscript "¾oz." and "2N9" rate; minor tear in back flap and one of two vertical file folds passes through the "Perth" postmark, and inner folds fragile minor separation; otherwise Very Fine.

Provenance: Lussey

The letter, from the postmaster and inspector of licenses at Perth, enclosed £2, 13/- in duties to H.M. Receiver General at York. The amount represented a £3 fee for a tavern license less 10% plus 1/-. The postage of "2N9" was triple the basic 11d rate for 201-300 miles. There was an additional charge of 11d each for two enclosures.
