Canada, Earliest Recorded Cross-Border Money Letter, folded cover postmarked Wellington Square (U.C.) rimless c.d.s. with red manuscript date "3rd/Januy/1839" and matching manuscript "free/A. Bates P.M.", large red "NIAGARA U.C./8/JAN/1830" exchange office c.d.s. lightly struck at lower left with the manuscript U.S. rate changed from "18¾" to "37½" due upon discovering that the letter contained an enclosure; small portion of address leaf missing at upper left, Fine and scarce.

There was no Money Letter service in the U.S. Canadian postage to the border was required but prepayment of U.S. postage was option. In this case the Wellington Square postmaster's free frank covered the postage to the border but the U.S. postage was marked for collection from the addressee.
