France, 1871 (Sept. 16) folded letter to Varennes, bearing Postage Due Provisional surcharge in manuscript "2" on "1" of 15c black to transform the stamp into 25c because of the immediate increase in postal rates (unpaid letter charge went from 15 centimes to 25 centimes as a result of the Franco-Prussian War), large margins showing portion of adjoining stamp at left, well tied by "Auxerre/(83)" c.d.s., with another strike alongside, the stamp has small surface crack at left, otherwise Very Fine and one of the rarer towns employing this Provisional manuscript surcharge.
