1869, 15¢ brown & blue, type II, center inverted (119b), quite nicely centered for this as the perforations clear the design virtually all around, unusually fresh colors and light unobtrusive cancel which does not obscure the vignette. Fine and completely sound.

FEWER THAN 100 EXAMPLES OF THIS RARE INVERT ARE BELIEVED TO EXIST, MOST OF THESE ARE HEAVILY CANCELLED AND FAULTY, IN FACT, THE CATALOGUE VALUE IS FOR A SINGLE WITH FAULTS. THIS EXAMPLE WITH ITS EXCEPTIONAL FRESHNESS, LIGHT CANCEL AND SOUND STATE IS TRULY EXCEPTIONAL.

Expertization: 1990 and 2002 P.F. Certificates.

For a variety of reasons, the overwhelming majority of the 1869 inverts are faulty and/or repaired. As for the 15¢ 1869 invert, out of the 100 or so estimated examples, less than ten have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation as sound. Not only is the present example one of these elite few, it is also one of the most lightly cancelled as well.
