Lot 3039

1847, 5¢ red orange (1c), ample to large margins, characteristic late fine impression, tied by light red square grid, matching "New-York May 6" c.d.s. on folded cover to the President of Yale, in New Haven, 1851 docketing, Very Fine and rare. For years, t his was considered by Ashbrook and others to be the true "Orange", probably the Holy Grail of 1847 shades. Changes in the nomenclature, not to mention the Scott catalog (which eventually dropped the listing) decree that this be called a Red Orange, but any comparison with a still vibrant example of that elusive shade will show the difference. Dr. Chase believed this was the only on-cover example of the Orange, and one of only three known in any condition.
