1854-55, 3¢ rose red (11), horizontal pair, margins to cutting, tied by "New-York Jun. 26" c.d.s. and blue "Stmr. Sierra Nevada/ via Nicaragua/ Advance of the Mails" in oval on 1854 folded letter from San Francisco to Boston, partially struck red shield of Boston on reverse, Fine & scarce. The "Sierra Nevada" was a Vanderbilt steamer put into service in late 1853, as part of his response to competition from the New York & California Line.
