1854-55, 3¢ rose red (11), bottom margin pair, in at top, dry print, tied by "STEAM/SHIP" hs on buff cover to Portsmouth, R.I. with blue "VIA NICARAGUA./ AHEAD OF THE MAILS./ Leland" in truncated box at TR; cover internally reinforced with similiar paper, Fine appearance. George Leland, later a partner with John McCombe in an express company, was originally a letter bag operator who copied the Vanderbilt slogan and handstamp format for his own local (S.F.) service.
