1851, 12¢ black, diagonal bisect (17a), top left half, clear to large margins, tied by "New York 7 cts Sep. 25" c.d.s. on Aug. 31, 1853 folded letter to New Bedford, complete strike of red "VIA NICARAGUA/ AHEAD OF THE MAILS" in octagon; interes ting contents touches on whaling, Hawaii, and bidding on a ship which sold for $16,850; contents bleed thru slightly and stamp with tiny tear at TR corner not mentioned in accompanying 1995 P.F. Certificate, still attractive, a Very Fine and rare usage.
