1852, 1¢ blue, type IV (9), horizontal strip of three, pos. 8-105E, margins to touching at R., rich color, used with 12c black (17), margins to slightly in, tied together by red grids on 1851 folded cover to Lyon, France, red "New-York Aug. 23" c.d.s., ms. "Steamer Humboldt" in corner, ms. "6" decimes due, Havre and Lyon pmks., some tiny natural bleach specks not affecting stamps appearance, still a desirable and Very Fine usage which overpaid the recently introduced 20c American packet rate; it is also a rare early use of the 12c (the earliest on record is a front dated Aug. 4th).
