Sale 257

Lot 3290

1852, 3¢ dull red (11), margins to slightly in, tied by "Cincinnati O. Jan. 18" c.d.s. on battered cover to a purser aboard the U.S. Brig Bainbridge at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, care of "Robt. Wright & Co. Baltimore Md.", magenta ms. "50" and red "Paid", reverse with ms. "Forwarded by Esliry & Alverys" but no other indication how this was handled- the rate to Brazil was 45c by British packet via England; what the Paid 50 represents is not clear but it did reach its destination: there is a large "Answered" written diagonally across the envelope which has clearly suffered over the years, nevertheless an intriguing usage worthy of further study.
