The American Bank Note Co. did not take over until Feb. 20, 1879. but stamps on soft paper used prior to this date are classified as American Bank Note stamps. Documented examples of these stamps, found used from late August Feb. 1879 are very scarce; this example, clearly showing the differences in papers, is exceptional.
