General Lee acquired from Mathews a riding horse, Ajax, who went with him to Lexington after the war; according to T.S. Dukeshire, this cover originally carried a thank-you letter dated March 4, 1864. The cover is accompanied by an E. & H.T. Anthony carte-de-visite, showing a photo of a lithograph portrait of Lee in uniform.
