Confederacy, Columbus Ky., clear postmark without readable date (postmarks from this office are always incomplete), matching"Paid" in frame and manuscript. "5" Confederate rate on 10-Star Flag, Cannon & Verse Patriotic in black on light buff, to Pleasant Hill, Miss., exceptionally fresh and Very Fine. Confederate forces occupied Kentucky south and west of the Green River from early Sept. 1861 until the latter part of February, 1862. Patriotic envelopes were used by soldiers writing home, but examples, often sent unpaid, are rare and choice examples even more so.
