Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green (1), horizontal pair, large to huge margins, rich color and fine impression, tied by bold "Welaka Fla." double circle without date, on cover to Capt. Stephens of the St. Johns Rangers, Jacksonville, postmark repeated at left with manuscript. Sept 29 date, pencil "Sep. 27, 1862" docketing, cover slightly reduced at left, well clear of postmark, Very Fine, pair Extremely Fine. The Stephens covers were sent to auction on behalf of a descendant as recently as 1976; the group accounts for virtually all the known Confederate Welaka covers of which eight are franked with the 5¢ Green, this being one of the finest.
