Sale 257

Lot 3705

Confederacy, 1862, 2¢ green (3), horizontal strip of five, positions 1-5, full margins except touching one spot at top right and barely in at lower left, bright color and crisp white paper, each stamp cancelled by grid, matching "Salem N.C. Oct. 7" postmark on fresh brown cover to the Hon. S.J. Bolling in Montgomery, Ala. The right stamps has been partly lifted to reveal a "Paid 10" handstamp, which suggests this was prepared in advance and originally intended for sale as a provisional envelope. There is also a manuscript "13" which was most likely a post office charge account number, the strip effectively tied by offset from this markings, Extremely Fine, one of the greatest 2¢ Jackson multiples paying the 10¢ rate.
