1915, 5¢ brown test stamp, block of 4 with R sheet margin, without gum as issued, Very Fine. These "stamps" are believed to have been printed by the American Stamp & Ticket Vending Co., a German firm operating in the U.S. Their purpose was to test equipment that would produce coil stamps without paste-ups, in hopes of gaining a contract from the BEP. They were printed by an intaglio process from a design made by altering the then-current 5¢ Washington.
