Sale 259

Lot 2416

Canada, 1888, 3¢ bright vermilion (41), tied on cover to England by Yarmouth, N.S. squared circle, Dec 28, 1895, also bearing U.S. 5¢ #255 tied by Boston duplex Dec 29, backstamped Liverpool Jan 8, 1896; both stamps are defective, the 3¢ crudely repaired prior to use, light foxing, Fine and highly unusual. The rate to the U.K. was 5¢ to the U.S. was 3¢ U.S. to the U.K. was 5¢. The sender apparently applied the U.S. stamp in Canada, Robson Lowe illustrates two similar covers and theorizes that either a.) the sender knew that letters franked with U.S. stamps could catch an earlier packet from Boston than from Halifax or b.) the "writer knew that letters to the U.K. were 5¢ and to the U.S. 3¢ and was dumb enough to spend 8¢", or c.) the writer was the notorious manufacturer of postal history, Henry Hechler.
