3¢ Dull red (11), horizontal pair, margins to slightly in, tied by "Grass Valley Cal. 24 May" c.d.s. on blue envelope to Scotland with manuscript. "Due 23" beside it, bold "1/2½" due handstamp, reverse with Perth receiving postmark and "Art-5/Br. pkt." handstamp, both in green, the latter marking sometimes found on unpaid letters from California; cover without top flap, Fine and very scarce. This was sent by someone who thought only the inland U.S. postage of 6¢ needed to be prepaid; the Grass Valley postmaster agreed but the British correctly marked this for 1sh.2½d (29¢)collect.
