"Received and forwarded by/Parrott Scarborough and Co./Mazatlan/Sept. 16 '38", forwarder's notation in manuscript on reverse of May 4, 1838 folded letter from Honolulu to Boston, which originally contained a bank draft for £958, one of three payments, "the first I send you via Mexico", carried via Durango and Guadalajara to Vera Cruz, faint strike of that city's postmark and manuscript."Va Cr. 13th Octr 30/Rd. & Forwd by y.o. sol. P.A. Stolz", face of cover with red "New Orleans La. Nov 15" c.d.s. and matching "SHIP" handstamp, "52" double rate (25¢ over 400 miles plus 2¢ ship captain's fee), Fine, exceedingly rare and very early usage, unlisted in American Stampless Cover Catalog Vol. II and precedes by three years the earliest examples of similar via Mexico mail to be found in Letters of Gold or The Honolulu Advertiser Collection Part 2.
