Sale 261

Lot 1216

15¢ Brown & blue, type I (118), block of 9. Superb colors and impression. Full, fresh o.g., center stamp never hinged, two others barely hinged. Overall Fine for this issue and especially so for a multiple of this size.
Scott $92,500 as block of 4 + 5 singles

EXCEPTIONALLY WELL PRESERVED, THE LARGEST KNOWN MINT MULTIPLE AND A HIGHLY IMPORTANT EXHIBITION PIECE.

Provenance: Worthington, Lozier, Sinkler, Gibson, Wunderlich, Ishikawa

The 15¢ type I may well be considered as the most difficult value to locate mint, in sound condition and with full original gum. Our review of the major auction catalogues since January 2000 has revealed only examples in total. Recognizing the paucity of examples from this finite population can help us comprehend the miracle of this superb block of nine.
