The 2¢ probably represents carrier service to the New Brunswick post office. The scarcity of mail from New Brunswick in this period makes it difficult to ascertain if writing a rate inside the postmark was standard procedure for this office, but study of local newspapers would shed light on whether carrier service operated. Whatever the explanation, this is an intriguing and unique 1847 usage.
