Sale 262

Lot 288

1847, 5¢ red brown (1), large margins to touched, clear impression, attractive dark shade, cancelled by "Paid" in black and red ink, similar "Woodstock Vt. Jan. 3" c.d.s. (showing the barest traces of red) on light buff envelope to Montpelier, manuscript "pd" opposite stamp, Fine and rare.
Estimate 500 - 750

Expertization: 1999 P.F. Certificate.

Alexander lists this as black, but traces of red remain in the datestamp. As noted in the next lot, we propose this was a homemade black which picked up some red from the cancelling devices. The results here are very striking---in the "Paid" handstamp the "A" is entirely in red while the "D" is black (the other letters show traces of both).
