Lot 30

1847, 10¢ black (2), large margins including part of adjoining stamp at top dark shade, tied by attractive Union Jack pen cancel on fresh white envelope to North Fair Haven, Mass. with clear "Fort Gaines Ga. Apr. 8" in black at far left, neat pencil docketing at left, Extremely Fine.
Estimate 2,000 - 3,000

THE ONLY RECORDED 1847 COVER FROM FORT GAINES.

Expertization: 1989 P.F. Certificate.

Provenance: "Seven Oaks"

Fort Gaines did not receive stamps of either denomination. It is likely the sender, R.N. Swift, carried his own supply and may have even cancelled this himself, based on the fact that another Swift cover (from Columbia, Ala.), has the 10¢ pen cancelled in the same manner.

Realized $3,750
