1847, 5¢ red brown (1), ample margins, fine impression, tied by red grids, matching "Penn Yan N.Y. 28 Jun" c.d.s. and "Paid" handstamp on 1851 folded letter to New York, large manuscript. "W" written at left indicating "way usage", brief contents with mortgage payment inquiry headed Penn Yan but dated June 23rd, which argues for this having been handed over to someone rather than deposited directly in the Penn Yan post office, received July 1st, the first day of the new stamps, Very Fine, an interesting and unique usage.
