Lot 58

1847, 10¢ black (2), mostly large margins, clear at bottom, tied by twice-struck blue "Paid" handstamp on 1848 folded letter to Quincy, Ill., no townmark, stamp slight tone spot in margin, contents bleed through slightly, still Very Fine, an intriguing usage.
Estimate 1,500 - 2,000

Expertization: 1999 P.F. Certificate.

Only the last page of what was a 5-page letter remains, following it are two short notes, one datelined Glasgow, the other Rockdale, both 1848; only Kentucky had post offices with these names in this period. It is also possible this never entered the mails until Quincy, which used blue ink in 1848; comparison with that office's Paid handstamp might solve the puzzle.
