Lot 1389

Postage Due, 1879, 1¢ deep brown, Special Printing (J8), rich distinctive special printing color and a prooflike impression on bright paper, attractively centered, natural s.e. at right. Full o.g., lightly hinged, light "D. & Co." handstamp on reverse. Very Fine and choice example of this rare postage due.
Scott $17,500

Expertization: 1960 and 1999 P.F. Certificates.

While Scott records 9,420 stamps as having been issued, it is widely accepted that only a minute percentage of those sold were actually the special printing, in fact less that 50 have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation. This example is one of only a very few which are both fault free and still retaining full original gum.

Realized $8,000
