No 1847 stamps of either denomination were sent to Sing Sing. The distinctive 35mm postmark, with rate but without state designation, may be unique with an 1847 stamp. Sing Sing prison, originally called Mount Pleasant State Prison, was built by inmates of Auburn, under the direction of Warden Elam Lynds, and finished in October 1828. The site, near the village of Sing Sing, was chosen for the availability of marble and other stone.
