Lot 1101

1847, 5¢ red brown (1), mostly large margins, clear at lower left, fine impression, tied by red Herringbone cancel and matching "Binghamton N.Y. Apr. 23" c.d.s. on white envelope to Sarah Roseboom in Cherry Valley, outlined Roman numeral "V" struck at far right and obliterated by second strike of herringbone, small ms. "paid" at lower left; stamp affixed with a wax seal and lightly creased upon use, still Very Fine.
Estimate 7,500 - 10,000

ONE OF THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY EXAMPLES EXTANT OF THIS RENOWNED FANCY CANCEL.

Expertization: 1993 P.F. Certificate.

Provenance: Ishikawa

The distinctive Roman "V" was used only on stampless mail out of Binghamton or on redirected letters. Presumably the clerk thought the writer intended sending this letter unpaid. There are only three of this fancy rate handstamp on an 1847 cover.

The clearly struck second Herringbone cancel, used to obliterate the "V" rate marking, offers an outstanding and unobstructed view of this usually poorly struck fancy cancel.
