1847, 5¢ red brown (1), two singles, each large to clear margins, bright shade and very fine impression, tied together by blue "Philada. Pa. 10 Feb. 15" c.d.s. on 8" x 5¼" homemade brown envelope to Flemington, N.J. paying a double rate, with enclosure consisting of a glazed Valentine envelope in gold on white with hand-colored address panel, same name ("Miss. Mary Capner") at center; each stamp with small tear at top, Very Fine appearance, unusual usage.
Estimate 1,000 - 1,500

Expertization: Photocopy of 1991 P.F. Certificate.

By making his own envelope the sender obviously took care to protect the glazed envelope which normally would have been used to receive stamps and postmark. It is ironic that the Valentine itself is lost, but the plain brown outer envelope, the most expendable part of the package from the point of view of the recipient, was carefully opened and is not only still in existence but well preserved.
