St. Louis, Mo., 1846, 5¢ black on bluish pelure (11X7), bottom left corner margin single, type III, position 5 showing large to gigantic margins including 11½ mm. sheet margin at bottom, cancelled by pen strokes and matching "5" and tied by red "Paid" handstamp on 1847 folded letter to the wife of William Pettus in St. Charles, matching "St. Louis Mo. Mar. 4" c.d.s at left and manuscript "postage due" at top center, contents from her brother mentions a trip from New Orleans aboard the steamboat Old Hickory; stamp with sealed tear at upper right corner, still Extremely Fine appearance, rare cancelled with the manuscript rate and tied by the Paid handstamp.
