Hawaii, 1864, 2¢ vermilion & 5¢ blue (31a, 32), pen cancelled and tied by target cancels on 3¢ U.S. entire (U58) to South Glen's Falls, N.Y., postmarked "Honolulu/U.S. Postage Paid" c.d.s. (M-H 242.03), Jan 22 [1867], U.S. 2¢ black (73) applied at San Francisco, cancelled by target (another strike cancels the 2¢ indicia) and tied by Feb 18 S.F. c.d.s., minor flaws, Fine and rare.
Estimate 10,000 - 15,000

Expertization: 2001 P.F. Certificate.

Carried on the brig "Hesperian", which left Honolulu on January 23 and arrived in San Francisco on Feb 15. The postmaster at San Francisco apparently added the 2¢ Black Jack to allay any doubts as to whether the full U.S. postage of 5¢ had been paid (it had - with the 2¢ Hawaii and the 3¢ stamped envelope). This is the only full cover recorded with this Black Jack usage (a cover front from the same sailing was sold in the "Hawaiian Advertiser" sale).

Realized $14,000
