5¢ Taylor (179), single with wide side margins, used with 2¢ vermilion (178) and 10c brown (161), each tied by matching large target on cover to naturalist James Orton at La Paz, Bolivia, partial strike of "Poughkeepsie N.Y. Dec. 29" c.d.s. and bold red "12 New York Dec. 30" c.d.s., indistinct Peru postmark in blue on reverse; 5¢ with small toned spot, Very Fine and rare usage.

In 1876 Prof. Orton began an exploration of the Great Beni River, dying on Sept. 25, 1877 at Lake Titicaca in Peru. As there is no indication of forwarding, this was most likely mailed in 1875, reaching him prior to the start of what would be his final expedition.
