5¢ Taylor, 12¢ violet (179, 162), single of each, cancelled by matching segmented cork cancels in blue, 5¢ tying, on small ca. 1875 cover to Genl. Emory Upton in Calcutta, India, matching c.d.s. of Palmyra N.Y. mostly struck off edge, Calcutta backstamp; slightly reduced at left, Fine and rare; although endorsed "(Via) San Francisco" (a routing by American packet no longer in effect), it was franked for the short-lived 17¢ German mail rate.

At the time of this mailing, General Upton was on a tour of inspection, gathering material for his study, "The Armies of Europe and Asia", published in 1878. Less than three years later he committed suicide at The Presidio at the age of 42.
