"in camp: near Platte Bridge/ Mailed Sept 13, 57", manuscript note on rebacked cover front to Maria Gove in Concord, N.H. from Capt. Jesse Gove, with two copies of 3¢ brownish carmine (11), margins to slightly in, tied together by pen strokes, received Oct. 28th; some edge wear, Fine and rare usage. Capt. Gove participated in the 1857-58 campaign against Brigham Young and the Mormons. The Platte Bridge post office was established on Nov. 2, 1855. The lengthy contents of this cover were originally published in The Utah Expedition 1857-58 by the New Hampshire Historical Society in 1928. The letter, headed "Camp 48" begins: "I sent you no. 8 from Platte Bridge. I had an opportunity to send it to Ft. Laramie by a gentleman who stopped in camp last night, and you will probably get it much earlier than I expected when I left it at the Bridge." A photocopy of the complete contents accompanies the lot.
