An ardent abolitionist and agent of the Underground Railroad, Kane befriended Brigham Young and accompanied the Mormons on their pilgrimage to Utah; he was instrumental in persuading them to give up their opposition to the U.S. Army in 1858. He was breveted Maj. General of volunteers for his performance at Gettysburg but resigned for health reasons in Nov. 1863.
