Intended as a way to ease tensions between northern and southern factions in Congress, the Act repealed the Missouri Compromise, divided the Unorganized Territory into the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, and allowed settlers to decide for themselves whether to be slave or free. The result was The Border War.
