UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THE WORK-UP PLATE PROOFS.

Each stamp has circled areas in pencil to indicate to the printer those areas which needed to be "made-up", i.e. reworking the printing technique to improve each plate's impression; each shows on the reverse the impression of the pencil in the color of the stamp indicating that these pencil strokes were made while the proof sheets were still on the press.
