Treasury Dept., 1873, 3¢ brown (O74), tied by quartered cork cancel, "Washington, D.C., Jul 1" (1873) c.d.s., on cover to Eugenia Ont., Canada, Treasury Dept., Third Auditor's Office corner card, ms "to pay 3" erased and "U.S. 10 cts" handstamp applied; reduced somewhat at left, otherwise Very Fine, 3¢ short payment of 6¢ treaty rate, short-paid covers were treated as unpaid and charged the full rate plus a 4¢ penalty, hence the 10¢ due marking.

THE ONLY RECORDED 3¢ TREASURY FIRST DAY COVER.

This cover can be accurately dated to 1873 by the small Washington c.d.s. which was used only in 1873 and early 1874, thus confirming it as a First Day cover.
There are only four Official First Day covers recorded: one 3¢ State, two 3¢ 6¢ Interior combinations (see lot 3400 for one of these) and the cover offered above. This is the only Official First Day cover used to a foreign country.
