Navy Dept., 1873, 2¢ ultramarine (O36), tied by separated cork cancel, "Washington, D.C., Feb 7" c.d.s., used to make up the 5¢ U.P.U. rate on a twice-forwarded cover overseas; originally addressed to a U.S. Marine on station in Norfolk, Va. with a 3¢ green (158) tied by light ultramarine cancel, an illegible matching postmark alongside; the cover was returned to the Navy Dept. in Washington where the 2¢ Navy was added and the cover was forwarded to London, England in care of B.F. Stevens, the U.S. Despatch Agent, at Charing Cross; Stevens then forwarded the cover to the addressee in Villefranche s/Mer, France; backstamped London and Villefrance c.d.s.s and red B.F. Stevens oval, the 2¢ Navy is also tied by a clear Charing Cross c.d.s.; minor toning 3¢ stamp, Very Fine.
