Lot 3346

Navy Dept., 1873, 3¢ ultramarine (O37), tied by fancy violet 4-point star, matching Georgetown, D.C. c.d.s, on cover to a Capt. W.A.T. Maddux, Asst Qtr. Master, U.S. Marine Corps, Philadelphia, docketed 1878 "from sister about…", Fine single 3¢ domestic rate.
Estimate 300 - 400

This cover is noteworthy for three reasons: first, this is the only recorded use of Navy stamps from Georgetown; second, Capt. Maddux apparently illegally supplied his sister with Navy stamps for her personal use; and finally, the cover is an example of the trials being conducted by the Georgetown post office with this distinctive violet cancelling ink.

Realized $400
