Expertization: 1986 P.F. Certificate as a "cut down essay in black brown".
This essay was the subject in an article in the August 1989 Chronicle article detailing its history. It was bought as a trial color plate proof, then certified by the Philatelic Foundation as a cut down die proof before the original owner discovered that the oval was unbeaded. The Philatelic Foundation then re-certified it as a cut down essay, continuing to call the color black brown. Scott's listing, in our opinion, correctly identifies the color as black.
