1882, 5¢ gray brown, unofficial bisect (205 var.), upper right diagonal half, well tied by bold "New York Dec. 23 `83" duplex on double rate large size cover used locally, reduced at left but well clear of address so as to appear to be a normal size envelope; small cover tear at R. edge, Very Fine appearance, probably unique. A note from a previous owner argues that a shortage of 2¢ & 4¢ stamps resulted in such usages; whatever the explanation, it was accepted as payment.
