Canada 1852, 3d red (4), four margins, clear double transfer (position 53, pane B), tied by target cancel on cover from Quebec to "Monte Bello, Petite Nation", postmarked Quebec, Sept 3, 1853, backstamped Montreal, Sept 4, and Montebello, Sept 5. Very Fine.

Addressed to Louis Joseph Papineau, who led an unsuccessful French-Canadian revolt against the English-controlled Legislature of Lower Canada (Quebec) in 1837. He fled the country but was pardoned in 1845 and allowed to return. He then served in the Legislature from 1848-1854.

The term "Petite Nation" is derived from the Algonquin Indian name for the people who originally inhabited he region, the Oueskanini, meaning "people of the little nation".
