New York, N.Y., 1845, 5¢ black on bluish, signed "ACM" (9X1), block of 4. Position 11-12/16-17, clear to large margins, each stamp cancelled by a single blue pen stroke. Even, all over toning and faulty, but reasonably attractive, unpriced by Scott.

THE ONLY OFF-COVER BLOCK OF FOUR RECORDED.

Only two larger multiples are known: a block of nine used with a strip of three on cover to Ogdensburgh, N.Y.- the so-called "Hasbrouck" cover; and an irregular block of six on cover to Buffalo, N.Y., last seen in the Lapham collection nearly 70 years ago.
