Apr 29 1861, clear c.d.s. with 10¢ green, type V (35) cancelled by 4-bar square grid on orange envelope to Georgia Plain, Vt., enclosed is a 4-page miner's letter referring to the east coast as "back in the states" and writes of the upcoming Civil War, Fort Sumter and of the Pony Express:
"I expect you will have a pretty warm time of it in the states now while the secessionist are a foming we got the news hear of the fuss at Sumpter in a bout 10 dayes after it happen we get poney news from the states 2 and 3 times a week it crosses in 8 dayes so you se we now what is a going on their a bout as soon as you do Ephram dont you wish your buoys was harge enough to go do to South Carolinia an do some big fighting" also refers to mining as a "dam uncertain business".
